Emaline Delapaix: vocals, acoustic guitar, e piano, hand drum
Lukas Creswell-Rost: electric guitar, lapsteel, mandolin, keyboard, vocals
Emaline Delapaix is a singer-songwriter-musician who creates ethereal and haunting chamber folk, and gentle art pop songs on acoustic guitar, piano, celtic harp, and other bowed instruments. She also plays a handful of Nordic and Western European traditional songs exploring her ancestry. She is a self-taught singer who found her own voice and a way to deal with her emotions while growing up in a violent home, dealing with teenage homelessness and trauma, listening to many ground-breaking female artists music, including Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Nina Simone, Heather Nova, Julee Cruise and Bjørk. Emaline’s clear and haunting voice spans several octaves, switching between gentle lullabies and siren songs with ease and authenticity, often moving audience members to tears (in a good way!).
Emaline’s early and happiest childhood years were spent growing up in a small coastal mountain town in Australia called Thirroul, where she spent most of her time swimming in the sea, climbing trees and eating beans and bananas fresh from her beloved grandfather's garden. Her love of nature and being an only child led her to write poems, stories, and eventually, songs about the wild world around her. Her songs are authentic and raw at times; her lyrics are poetic, dealing with depression and mental health, healing nature, ancestor stories, animal welfare, love, chronic illness, human dignity, and self-worth.
Over the years, she’s drawn musical inspiration from living in unconventional places, including a cabin on an island in British Columbia Canada, a caravan in rural Eastern Germany close to the Polish border, as well as in Melbourne, London, Toronto, Quebec, Vancouver, and Berlin, where she spent half of her adult life. Most recently, Emaline moved to North Yorkshire after becoming chronically ill for two years with a break in music, seeking a quieter life with her Leeds-born partner Lukas, who also accompanies her at many concerts on mandolin, electric/lapsteel guitar, and more. Throughout her career, Emaline played over 500 concerts in 22 countries as a solo performer, in a duo, with a full backing band, as well as part of an all-female string/harp quartet. She’s shared stages with Little Feat, Oysterband, Emiliana Torrini, Patty Larkin, Fairport Convention, and Eddi Reader. Her music and voice have been called captivating, mesmerizing, moving, dreamy, uplifting, calming, powerful, otherworldly, witchy and tender, with frequent comparisons to Kate Bush, Heather Nova, and Tori Amos. Her music still carries her birth home of Australia in its notes, but along the way she was so inspired by snowed in Canadian winters and Northern European Autumn days, that you can often hear it in her songs, creating something quite special.
Aside from music, Emaline also runs an online vintage shop called 'Wild Finds' selling wild and whimsical treasures from Germany, Scandinavia, and the UK. She loves foraging and herbal medicine, and is also a vegan who regularly gives a percentage of her CD sales to local animal shelters while out on the road.
